Historical note: Chemicals used for film development of B&W film - TopicsExpress

Historical note: Chemicals used for film development of B&W film were formulated to produce different results with grain, which also could be altered by development process changes on time and temperature. One could push film (shoot ASA 400 film at a higher setting, like 1200), and adjust for that in development, which also would increase the grain in the resulting negative. This effect could also go the other way with reduced grain for more high detail photos too. A standard film developer for regular work was D-76. For finer grain, Microdol-X was commonly used.
