Historical note: Photographic papers were primarily fiber based - TopicsExpress

Historical note: Photographic papers were primarily fiber based and would absorb the chemistry quite easily during the development process. Thorough removal of these chemicals was necessary by a rinsing process before drying. The resulting prints, if trace chemicals were not properly rinsed, could fade or turn brown over time in spots. Additionally, prints made on fiber based papers would normally have a satin or matte finish. Glossy finishes where obtained by drying the prints on a chrome metal heated plate or roller with the print placed face down on the highly polished surface. Later, glossy and other surface finishes didnt require this special drying process with the advent of resin coated photographic papers.
