Historically Speaking: The Moabites (Ruth 1:1-4) Israel and the Moabites did not have a happy history. The people of Moab were descendants of one of the children Lot conceived with his daughters when his daughters tricked him (Genesis 19:30-38), and they became a thorn in Israels flesh, not only refusing to let the Israelites pass through their land on the way to Canaan but leading the Israelites into immorality and idolatry and causing a plague of judgment that killed 24,000 Hebrews (Numbers 25:1-9). Although the law of Moses did not explicitly forbid an Israelite from marrying a Moabite, it was well understood that Moabites and their descendants were excluded from the congregation of Israel for 10 generations because of their idolatry (Deuteronomy 23:1-4). This alone should have been enough to dissuade Elimelech from arranging Moabite wives for Mahlon and Chilion. -Dr. David Jeremiah #JeremiahStudyBible
