History & Haunting of : Scattery Island Cathedral , County Clare, Ireland. Home to a monastery founded by St. Senan in the early 6th century. A fisherman, being detained on Scattery Island by a storm early last century, and hence unable to attend mass at Kilrush, went up into the ‘cathedral’ to pray. After a time he looked up and saw a crowd of monks and laity with priests at the altar in gorgeous vestments. He shut his eyes in terror and prayed, and when he ventured to look again he saw only ‘the clouds flitting over the roofless church and the old ravens croaking and wheeling over their nests on the tower top’ Scattery Island is an island in the Shannon Estuary, Ireland. It lies off the coast of Kilrush, County Clare. The island is home to a lighthouse, a ruined monastery, an Irish round tower and the remains of an artillery battery. There are the remains of his oratory and house and of seven rude churches or chapels, together with a round tower and a holy well still in repute. It is fortified and marked by a lighthouse. The inhabitants of Scattery Island appear to have escaped the deaths and emigration, associated with nearby Kilrush, during the famine period. The total population of the island, including the soldiers, actually increased from 65 in 1841 to 99 in 1851 and to 139 in 1861, the numbers of houses in this period increased from 9 in 1841 to 24 in 1861. The memorial inscriptions on the gravestones do not show any deaths of islanders during the period 1845 to 1850. Perhaps a combination of fishing and additional shipping, due to famine imports and emigration, provided good employment for the pilots at this time and helped them to survive. The last residents left in 1969. The island has seen much turmoil over the centuries having been raided numerous times by the Vikings, Irish and Anglo Normans. The Vikings had a stronghold here in the mid 10th century. Other features on the island include a late 16th century tower house, 19th century battery and lighthouse and a 19th-20th century village, home to river pilots and fisher-farmers up to the late 1970’s. A place of prayer, battle and beauty! pilgrimagemedievalireland/ clarelibrary.ie/ Photo 1 by pilgrimagemedievalireland/ Photo 2 by PeteB101, The ruins of the cathedral and the round tower PeteB101,tripadvisor- Photo 3 by clarelibrary.ie-The Street in the deserted village Photo 4 & 5 by oileain.org Photo 6 by Interior of St Senan’s church by pilgrimagemedievalireland/
