History Of Glengoffe, St Catherine ,Jamaica.Entry Number 7. October 26 ,2013. Root Crops, Ground Provisions, Tubers and Use. Except for the cassava which the Tainos and Arawaks were using when the Spaniards arrived in 1494 ,most of the crops grown in Glengoffe were not indigenous to Jamaica.Crops such as the breadfruit from Tahiti in the Pacific and the ackee from the Ivory Coast and Gold Coast.....Ghana in Africa were brought to the island by Captain William Bligh as food for slaves.The British brought root crops ,trees and plants to Jamaica from various parts of the world especially from regions with a tropical climate but also from temperate regions.They adapted to the soil and climate of the island and many grew naturally.As a result Glengoffe had a wide variety of root crops ,trees and plants which provided food, some of which could be eaten in the natural form ,cooked or fried to be eaten or processed to make drinks and baked products. Others were grown for their culinary use and because they were considered to have medicinal properties. A wide variety of yam was grown..............Lucy ,Yellow ,St Vincent ,Renta ,Affu, Negro ,Yampie and Sweet Yam.The Sweet Potato which was brought from the South America countries of Peru and Equador was widely grown in the Community.It was eaten cooked and was also used in the making of pudding and duchanoo. The traditional method of making the pudding was placing the pot with the potato mixture on a wood fire or a coal stove and then placing a tin covering with burning coal on top.A popular riddle associated with this was......Hell A Top. Hell A Bottom.Allelluia In A Middle. Cassava was eaten cooked and was used to make dumpling and bammy.It was processed to make a starchy liguid which was used to stiffen clothes before ironed.The clothes was placed in the starchy liquid and then put to dry.In the nineteen fifties and the nineteen sixties a woman wearing a well starched and ironed Crinoline Skirt made a fashion statement. Arrowroot was grated and used to make porridge.The Arrowroot starch had medicinal properties and was used to ease diarrhea and sooth the stomach.Turnip was grown and used in soup.Coco, Dasheen and Tayah were eaten cooked and were used as food for pigs. Ginger was grown and was used as a culinary spice and to make tea.It was widely used as a remedy for ailments such as nausea and digestive disorders such as indigestion and upset stomach. Turmeric was brought from Asia to Jamaica by the East Indians and is the main ingredient in the Jamaican Curry.In Glengoffe the Tumeric was grown and used to color and flavour foodstuff.
