History from Copper River: 1899, two prospector came to the village of Mentasta and found all the people died that winter from a flu epidemic. There were only a few left that spring and they were overwhelm by the deaths. In their journal they said people from Tetlin were there that spring to help bury the dead. This happen thru out Alaska and it also happen again in 1917 and 1927...The TP epidemic was in 1940-50..I got TB at that time but somehow I came out only with scar on my lung. This is one reason why a lot of our older old people wont talk about those time..It was so great a tragedy they just buried it in their minds with their lost love ones...There were big epidemic way before 1899 throughout Alaska and in the Northen Eskimo Country, they still remember whole village dying out. It was like that through out Alaska. Sad but we need to know this because you wont get it in school.
