History lovers alert! The John Rankin House in Riipley, Ohio is nearing the completion of an extensive ( and expensive) restoration. A beacon of freedom for thousands , and the scene, in real life, of Elizas escape in Uncle Toms Cabin. Its a beautiful drive along US Route 52, about an hour east of downtown Cincinnati, with the beautiful Ohio River as your companion the whole drive. Youll pass the birthplace of Ulysses Grant along the way. The Rankin House remains open regular hours as work is finishing up. A special rededication ceremony, FREE to the public, will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11 am. Get there early. The Rankin House, Grant Birthplace ( Point Pleasant), Grant Boyhood Home ( Georgetown), Harrisons Tomb ( North Bend), and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Walnut Hills are all owned by Ohio History Connection ( formerly known as Ohio Historical Society) and are operated by local, volunteer, non-profit groups.
