History of MCSC by Bruce Geddes (The Early years) .. slightly edited to protect innocent parties involved 1960, We moved to Muizenberg, from Plumstead. My dad was the bank manager, and we lived on top of the Standard bank. You could see the waves from my bedroom, and as a result, I almost failed matric, with an E for English. Those days, there were only a handful of guys surfing. The Bokhorst brothers, Farmer Hank, Andy Spengler, Peter Basford,(older than us and had a hot motor bike) Chris Bramwell, Johan van Niekerk, all lived in Muiz. Trevor Espey, Charlie Moir, and Piers (Muncher) Meintjies came from Bergvliet, and had to come by train. George Bunting, and Cliffie Lemkus also had to commute. The girls that made up the corner crew all lived in the building around me, Dianne McLean, Marilyn Drake, Debbie Mortimer, June Bray, and the Cooras sisters, Demetra, Helen, and Soula, lived across the road. We could all talk to each other from our balconies. The Corner was our hang out, and days were spent surfing, lying in the sun, and playing soccer on the beach till our parents called. The Bokhorst brothers built boards, and sold me my first one, the rest I built myself, as you could buy the foam and glass for R25. Not many people could afford a Whitmore in those days, We dived lead, and sold perlemoen to the St.James hotel for 12c each. The Bops were at the Herchel Hall, Pavilion, and Fish Hoek hall. Territory was important, and fist fights occurred. There were a bunch of ducktails in Muiz/ Lakeside called Casper, Spooky, and Tiny. They were to be avoided, till a MCSC member sorted out Spooky in a spectacular, crowded fisticuffs bout on the lawn at the corner. (I recall he had a sinker in his right hand) Gradually more kids joined the surfing community, Nicky Howe (Hough), and some other guys from Falsebay (see picture) joined us, and if we could hitch a ride, we went to Long Beach to test the fearsome shore break. We used to sleep under the Milkwoods for the week end. George Bowes arrived from Zimbabwe, and hid mother was appointed the manageress of Sandown on Sea hotel. We made our club house in the store room of the hotel, below the railway line, and right above the rocks ( we sometimes launched from them) We built George`s firs board in the club house, and this venue later became the MCSC club. Those were wonderful years, and I wish I could remember all the names (Nicky help) In 1965 I joined the Air force, and only came home occasionally for holidays. I had a car now, so George and I could do Elands Bay, etc. I spent 20 years in the dreaded Transvaal, but returned to buy the house in the picture, right back on Muizenberg beach. I started surfing again, and taught my son to surf. My grand daughters are now 8, and have also started surfing. Who would like to fill in the gaps???? Regards, Bruce Geddes
