History of Southampton 1612. On the 3rd July 1612 the town was given a copy of the "new Bible" by John Favour . This was , of course , the new version of the Bible which had been initiated by King James and had been published in May 1611 . John Favour had been born in Holy Rood parish , Southampton , in January 1557 , and by 1612 he was a lawyer and vicar of Halifax . He gave precise instructions about how , where and why the Bible should be kept in the town . It was to be chained to a desk in the council chamber of the Audit House , to be " the edification of those who shall reade therein as also that by sight thereof the good Magistrates may be put in mind of mercy and judgement and to doe all things to God`s glorie and in love of their brethren " The Bible was valued at 50s ; this has to be viewed in comparison with the one bought for the school three months later , which cost just 12s . Favour`s gift remained in the Council Chamber as he had requested , only being removed for rebuilding in 1733 .
