History proves Chiefs are cup kings Posted:7 October 2014 Time:12:55 pm A look at the history of silverware in South African club football shows that Kaizer Chiefs dominate the local game, mostly thanks to cup victories. This season marks the 30th year of professional football in South Africa, and a fitting time to remind the younger generation of supporters of the pedigree our various PSL clubs have behind them. Chiefs have won 47 major trophies in their illustrious history, Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates are second with 30 honours to their name and Mamelodi Sundowns are third with 18 pieces of silverware in total in the past 30 years. READ: Chiefs equal Sundowns PSL record Sundowns remain the club with the most number of top-flight League titles won (9) since the establishment of the NSL in 1985, with Pitso Mosimanes side adding one more to their tally last season. Pirates remain the only South African club to have lifted the African Champions Cup (now CAF Champions League) in 1995 and African Super Cup (one-off match) in 1996, with Chiefs winning the African Cup Winners Cup (now CAF Confederation Cup) in 2001. The Buccaneers are also the only team to have won back-to-back trebles in 2010/11 and 2011/12, while Sundowns (1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/00) and SuperSport United (2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10) are the only two sides that have won three consecutive League titles.
