History was made early this morning as the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy lifted off at 7:05 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Atop the Delta IV sat the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) on its historical maiden flight. The MPCV is intended to carry a crew of up to 4 astronauts to destinations beyond-low Earth orbit, with its eventual goal of facilitating human exploration of the Moon, asteroids and Mars.
