...Hitachi, in collaboration with a Polish banking services provider, ITCARD S.A., has started installing biometric “Finger Vein” technology across Poland. The technology works by using a combination of CCD camera and near-infrared light which passes through the finger and is partially absorbed by hemoglobin in the veins. The veins’ pattern is then captured and stored as a unique identifier for the individual person. This data is then stored and used to verify the user whenever a monetary transaction is done using the devices that are installed on ATM’s, thus removing the necessity to use PIN numbers for verification. Dubbed the “Planet Cash” project, it will be implemented in a minimum of 1,730 ATMs across Poland this year, and has already been employed in a number of banks in the country and will soon be made available for general public use...
