Hive Mind!!!! Doulas, Midwives and birth-y types especially needed!: Short version: If perfection isnt an option, is it better for a birth ball to be too small, too large, or does it become a matter of preference? (Too small meaning a 55cm ball for a 54 woman - angle of knees definitely a little less than 90*, but not uncomfortably so. In terms of comfort Im happy to keep the 55cm one but does having my pelvis lower than my knees in any way mess with the magic juju powers of the ball? My priority is doing whats good so if being low interferes with any benefits.) [Im clearly not good at short versions.] Long version: I no longer have the ball that I used for pregnancy, birth, and newborn stages with both boys. (Perhaps thats for the best as if it had survived all that it would be ready for retirement anyway). I did have a smaller ball, which I had bought at some point a long time ago for reasons I cant even recall. I recently brought ball #2 out to the living room and was trying to get in the habit of sitting on it, though it seemed like in addition to being on the small size, it wasnt inflated enough making it even smaller/lower. I had googled around and found that the prevailing wisdom is that ones knees should be at a right angle/thighs parallel to floor/hips and knees at same height. Google also informed me that most women should use a 65cm ball - the boundary for how short one should be before deciding to use a 55cm ball instead seems to vary depending on whos writing it, but most places say 54 and up should use 65cm. Well, Im 54 so right at that borderline. I went out and bought a brand new 65cm ball, brought it home, inflated it, and was surprised at the subtlety in the difference in size between ball #2 and ball #3. Through various trials and tribulations (taking up far more time than it should have because I found myself confused as to what the measurement means and getting conflicting data on that as well) I have eventually decided that yes this new ball is a 55cm ball and not a 65cm ball. Its certainly taller than the old, less inflated ball… I figure maybe I shouldnt try aggressively inflating that one anyway because its so old and it seems like its actually good for Banjo. So Im wondering if its better to keep the new, fresh 55cm ball for myself or if I should switch it for the 65cm one. (Im nervous to do an exchange because whos to say the whole store isnt full of improperly labelled balls!!!!). I am comfortable using the 55cm and wonder if a 65cm will feel too big - then again I think the old one was a 65cm and I used it for years so maybe Im wrong. Again, the important thing to me is to do whatever is best positioning wise or whatever.
