Together with local civil society organisations in developing countries, Hivos wants to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world. A world in which all citizens – both women and men – have equal access to opportunities and resources for development and can participate actively and equally in decision-making processes that determine their lives, their society and their future. Hivos programmes include: Rights & Citizenship: The Rights and Citizenship programme invests in civil society initiatives for democratic change, LGBT rights, women’s rights and HIV/AIDS that will lead to a more open, democratic and just society. Green Entrepreneurship: The Green Entrepreneurship programme builds the capacities of rural men and women and SMEs to improve their economic position in environmentally sustainable ways with an eye to making economic development more inclusive and green. Expression & Engagement: The Expression & Engagement programme is aimed at freedom of speech and expression and active involvement of citizens in social processes that influence them directly. Action for Change: The Action for Change programme aims to alter government policies and the behaviour of citizens and businesses in the North to bring concrete improvements to the living and working conditions of people in developing countries.
