Hm. The verdict on a popular series--the 12YO didnt like the ending and threw it against the wall. The 13YO got to the unfortunate event in the last book and said he was done, and didnt want to read the last 50 pages. How do you feel about unhappy endings? And if you knew in advance that there would be a downer ending, would you still read it? (My answer: if from the first page I know the end--ie that cancer will get your main character in the end, and the book is about the process--yes. If I know from spoilers that the downer event is meant to be a shock at the end...I leave it on the shelf.)
