Hmmmm. So a friend just called to announce the death of the pregnant wife of another friend. Theyve been married for about 2 years. The circumstances? The pregnant woman complained about pains in her chest in the morning. She was rushed to the hospital. No doctor at post. Family was asked to take her to another hospital. That was it. She died with the almost full term pregnancy on the way. So my head is reeling now and too many questions doing gymnastics in there: 1. Could this death have been avoided? 2. Is it possible there was no doctor on duty because medical personnel in that hospital are stretched and stressed as we have become accustomed to in many of our health facilities? 3. Could we have used some of the resources we so shamelessly spend on GFA and the Black Stars to equip some of our hospitals with adequate personnel? 4. Could we have gotten a few more selfless people into leadership and political positions? 5. Dr. Hubert Aheto, Frederick Mawuli Agbemafoh, Seyram Tettey-Quapedu, could we have encouraged a few more doctors to take up appointments in under-served communities with all the money the CHRAJ boss has spent on accommodation in the AU Village? 6. Nana Ama Agyemang Asante are we media practitioners also culpable? Are we dropping our guards as the watchers of the state purse? Hmmm. Justice, my condolences to you and the small boy. Im devastated now.
