Hmmmmmm. A bit historically ignorant. I think it was the British who did this exterminating rather than tolerating. As Niall Ferguson points out they sacrificed their empire in order to defeat the Nazis. They fought Germany for over 2 years before we entered the war. After the war, we, and the British, tolerated Stalin and assisted him in execution of Cossack and other Soviet refugees, that were in allied hands. One of my favorite characters in history, Laval, a prime minister of France, fought the Nazis, and specifically Hitler, for 7 years before anyone else, before they defeated France. He was executed, not by Hitler, but by Charles De Gualle at the end of the war, alledgedly for his actions and participation in the Vichy government. The problem was his early clairvoyance was an embarrassment to the rest of the post war French political establishment who used the post war period to do a lot of score settling by execution to which America did nothing to object. Either way, America tolerated this evil long after a lot of others fought it and did so afterwards. Notably, this is one area where I disagree with Rand Paul, I think America has an obligation to itself to lead the fight against immediate and imminent evil when it can. I think if we had let the Yazidis get slaughtered, it would effect our psyche deeply. That being said, the neoconservative push against Sadam Hussein was one of the biggest mistakes we have ever made.
