Hobby Lobby is owned by self-described deeply religious - TopicsExpress

Hobby Lobby is owned by self-described deeply religious Mennonites. I believe this to be the true, and I have absolutely no reason to doubt their sincerity. They take the position that their deeply-held religious views compel them to act in a manner that is at odds with the current law of the land, with respect to what forms of health case (specifically, birth control) a woman may receive when availing herself of the health insurance offered by Hobby Lobby. And, of course, that case is currently being heard by the Supreme Court. I think there are numerous flaws in the Hobby Lobby position. Heres a very basic one, simply stated: 1. Evidently, the Mennonite religion proscribes whatever contraception methods that Hobby Lobby is unwilling to support. 2. Some of Hobby Lobbys employees are also deeply-religious Mennonites; some are not. The Mennonite employees would not avail themselves of whatever methods their religion prohibits, regardless of whether it was offered in the health plan offered by Hobby Lobby. 3. Therefore, the only people likely to be affected by Hobby Lobbys claimed right are those who do not share their religious beliefs. Surely, that cant be a defensible position: that the Freedom of Religion right claimed by Hobby Lobby gives them the right to force their religious practices on non-Mennonites by selectively complying with current law.
