Holding a license in Architecture does not make one a good - TopicsExpress

Holding a license in Architecture does not make one a good Architect, and the ARE is not necessarily a good indicator of someones capability and capacity to be responsible for designing habitable space. I dont care where they were educated or if they are licensed or not, experience is the key defining characteristic that differentiates and qualifies Architects for a particular project or for a position in a firm. I have hired many Licensed Architects over the years that could not draw and specify a building - at least not one that was aesthetically pleasing, functional, constructible, correctly drawn and met the code - if their life depended on it. What our profession does not push is real-world construction knowledge, understanding of the building as an integrated, coordinated system of systems, functional and value-driven building programing, true project management - including a real understanding of project budgets and costs - and practical application of the codes. It isnt about market share for the old boys club, but really about rebuilding the reputation and esteem (and higher compensation) that our profession once enjoyed. I cannot tell you how many clients have commented to me that by exhibiting those skills, we have improved their opinion of Architects, because they had been burned so many times in the past. Architects, in general, need to focus on delivering value for their clients by taking responsibility and exhibiting these very special skills. In doing so we will gradually raise the opinion - and therefore the value - of our services to our clients because we will have earned their respect and appreciation by delivering a product and service that helps them achieve their goals.
