Holding your breath is not an effective protest strategy, unless you develop gills. - Devin Wright, of Evolutionary Books & Productions I dont remember the last time I shopped on Black Friday - not a political move but because Im not a fan of crowds (people are more likely to act like assholes in greater numbers) or capitalist human herding, but as long as you are a consumer, a boycott of retailers of products you need (or want) yet cannot produce is simply like holding your breath. Youre going to breathe eventually, and the major retailers can and will wait you out. A more effective strategy would be developing gills, to complete the metaphor as another way of receiving oxygen without the use of your lungs, or breathing - boycott the major retailers by finding alternatives, or pool your boycott dollars to become a producer, and one of the future alternatives. Effectively protesting is not a sprint but a marathon. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was effective because it lasted; it was a 13 month protest, where brothers and sisters walked to work or carpooled, refusing to ride the bus for over a year. They developed an alternative, which you have to do to be effective. I dont have a list of alternate retailers, but I do know a few independent retailers personally, including myself, who have braved the struggle to becoming producers, that would definitely appreciate your support. Ill tag them in the comments, feel free to tag some of your own, and should any decide to share this post, please do the same to assist others taking this idea of protest seriously. Viva humanity!!
