Holly grail : This is an exceptional week when no Hollywood film is released in India. It happens rare. The reason behind is PK. The only mega big ticket release which got a clean slate for almost three weeks. This is quite an uneven feat. It is the only release which can enjoy this lead. It is the year end and Hollywood naturally starts shifting its focus on Oscars. Majorly, those films are released in this duration which are pushed for Oscars. These serious intellectual movies are released without much of fanfare. In India also, we do follow the Oscar buzz. We generally release those films here which are poised to shine in Oscar n nominations. The Nominations would be announced in Mid January and the platform is all set. It’s a yearly practice. Last year, we had the splurge of releases in this duration. We had 12 YEARS A SLAVE which was released in limited screens in Jan and was later the winner. We had December release of The Wolf of Wall street which became a massive hit and was nominated in 5 categories. American Hustle was another biggie which was nominated in 10 categories and was quite an earner. It sadly could not bag any Oscar. Her was another Joaquin Phoenix starrer which was toast of the festival. Nebraska was blank and white classic which also did good in select cinemas. It was quite a feast last year for Oscar lovers. This year also look interesting with Oscar contenders getting released in January. The strongest is THE IMITATION GAME which is releasing here in mid-January. It is already been appreciated in several International festivals and was major attraction in recently concluded Goa Film Festival. Another strong contender is FOX CATCHER which is also well written about. Then there Michael Keaton starrer BIRDMAN which is creating a big euphoria. It has been seen by several celebs who travelled abroad and have posted in their social platform. The Interstellar is also looking in the same line of Gravity which swapped last year’s Oscars. The week belongs to PK which has opened very strong and has clearly dominated the entire exhibition scene. No Hollywood or no other regional cinema is released in this week. The only films which are still in some shows are EXODDUS and PENGUINS. The coming week has a solo Hollywood release NIGHT IN MUSEAM which is again a franchise and great festive attraction.
