Hollyoaks wedding: Gossip and pictures from Ste and John Pauls big day. Its not every day you get an invite to a soap wedding, but Digital Spy was lucky enough to be on the guest list as Ste Hay and John Paul McQueens Hollyoaks nuptials were filmed last month. Soaps often kindly invite DS to special press screenings to watch wedding episodes ahead of transmission, but this was a first for us as the team at Hollyoaks allowed a small group of journalists to watch some filming and even become extras in one scene. Becoming an extra for the day would be nerve-wracking enough, but with this being a Hollyoaks wedding, who knew which disasters could possibly befall us in the village where literally anything can happen?! Fortunately for us, the shows bosses resisted the urge to kill us all off with a mini-bus, flying car door or train crash - its all been done before at past weddings, and thered be nobody left to write about the show! With no stunts planned for once, perhaps we could at least give ourselves our own unscripted cliffhanger moment by shouting I object! at a well-timed opportunity for dramatic tension? Alas no, as our scene involved throwing confetti outside the church after the vows had already been changed! With our wedding-ruining plans thwarted, Ste and John Pauls big day actually goes off without a hitch until the reception, providing a romantic atmosphere for the soaps festive special. Fans have known for a while that the couple would be tying the knot in a specially-shot hour-long Christmas episode, but the scenes were actually filmed six weeks ago on location in Liverpool. The real-life location for the wedding was the Unitarian Church situated in the Sefton Park area of the city, and excitement was high among the cast and crew as they prepared to film the big scenes. When DS and the other journalists arrived at the church at 11.15am, the building had been transformed for an early Christmas, while the cast were already suited and booted as theyd been busy working for quite some time. As we were only needed for one scene, wed generously been given a later call time than the shows experienced regulars, sparing us an early start Everything in TV tends to happen later than scheduled, and that proved to be true for our soap debut as we waited patiently for our scene to arrive in the days running order. With time to spare, we were able to chill out inside the church while a few of the cast worked on some exterior scenes. Nicole Barber-Lane, who plays Myra, was quick to get into the spirit of the occasion as she quizzed each journalist about whether they were there as a McQueen or a Hay. Since little Lucas was the only nice Hay who immediately sprung to mind, we immediately answered McQueen! James Sutton, better known as John Paul in the soap, also showed himself to be a good sport as he gave everyone a sneak peek at the Geri Halliwell-style Union Jack dress hed be wearing on his characters stag night. Fortunately for him, he was pleased with the response he got… Once the moment finally arrived for our scene, the soaps crew werent taking any chances that wed ruin Hollyoaks Christmas! Confetti is naturally pretty messy, so there was only one opportunity to get the shot right - which meant a few rehearsal runs for practice involving us miming the motion of confetti-throwing! Youll be able to see how the scene went when Hollyoaks airs the special episode on Christmas Eve, but its fair to say that once it was shot, we were all getting a little carried away. There was talk of follow-up scenes, one of our soap journalist friends had christened herself Corsa McQueen, and given the strong loyalty to Stendan still shown on the Digital Spy forums, Id decided that my character was surely a spy working undercover and reporting back to Brendan Brady? Joking aside, the reality is that our on-screen moment will last for just a few seconds, but it was the perfect opportunity to get an insight into life behind the scenes at Hollyoaks and soaps in general. The cast genuinely are a friendly and hard-working bunch, and a big thank-you has to go to Nicole, James, Kieron Richardson and the rest of the shows stars for making us feel so welcome on such a busy day for them at work. After years of Hollyoaks being shunted around the schedules at Christmas, its also great to see Channel 4 reward the show and its fans with this hour-long festive episode and another extended special on New Years Eve. Keeping up Hollyoaks tradition of surprising its fans, both episodes have some shocks which are being kept under wraps, so tune in to find out exactly how it all unfolds. In the meantime, were off to recruit an acting agent and prepare our winning speech for Best Newcomer at the Soap Awards… Hollyoaks airs Ste and John Pauls wedding on Tuesday, December 23 at 7pm on E4 and Christmas Eve at 6.30pm on Channel 4.
