Hollywood has turned the Altmann family story about the quest to recover the looted Gustav Klimt painting, the Lady in Gold, into a movie, and now the trailer is out. The film is set to release in April 2015. (blogs.artinfo/artintheair/2014/12/23/helen-mirren-fights-nazis-for-art-in-woman-in-gold/) The story, in brief... The painting was looted from the Altmann familys Vienna home by the Nazis. After the Second World War, the paintings, including two portraits of Altmann’s aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer, ended up in Austrian governments possession. Five decades later, the family sued and, e-v-e-n-t-u-a-l-l-y, the painting was restituted. Helen Mirren stars in the film as Maria Altmann. I am no Helen Mirren, but I am smitten with this press release photo of her sitting in an airplane seat, gazing out the window, because just two months ago I sat and stared out the window with a similar expression. The Altmann family story takes place in Vienna... mine in Warsaw. But the feeling of heading to the land of shadows and ghosts as we seek out art that once belonged to our family, well, its a feeling I know first hand.
