Holy Spirit as Teacher Posted on August 20, 2013 by Bro. Kelly Holy Spirit is one that teaches; especially one whose occupation is to instruct the believers on the truth of God (John 16: 13). The Holy Spirit, in all His gifts and graces, shall not only come, but will rest and abide upon him that believes on our Lord Jesus Christ, he or she shall have the Spirit not by measure, but without measure, because the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ who is inside the believer, (Col.1:19, 2:9). John 16:13 Amplified Bible (AMP) 13 But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future]. The believer of Jesus Christ shall have the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and knowledge through our Lord Jesus Christ which will enable him/her to thoroughly understand the business he/she is to be employed in (Isa. 11:2,40:13,14). The Holy Spirit also gives the believer the courage to teach the way of God in truth without the fear of man. Isaiah 11:2 Amplified Bible (AMP) 2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord Isaiah 40:13-14 Amplified Bible (AMP) 13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has taught Him? 14 With whom did He take counsel, that instruction might be given Him? Who taught Him the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and showed Him the way of understanding? Sometimes, people who love simplicity find themselves under a moral impotency to change their own mind and way; they cannot turn by any power of their own. To this God answers, ‘Behold, I will pour out my Spirit unto you; set yourselves to do what can, and the grace of God shall set in with you, and work in you both to will and to do that good which, without that grace, you could not do.” The Holy Spirit not only speaks the word of God to us, but also makes them known to us, gives us understanding of the words especially to anyone that honestly seek Him and submit him/herself to the Spirit. Proverbs 1:23 Amplified Bible (AMP) 23 If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I [Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you. The Lord is a God of Knowledge, and there is no sound saving knowledge but what comes from Him; and therefore to Him we must look for it, who is the God of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is infinitely glorious in Himself and all glory is due to Him from His creatures, and He is the author of all that glory with which His saints are or shall be invested. Now He gives knowledge by giving the Spirit of knowledge; for the Spirit of God is the teacher of the saints, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary of Ephesians 1:17-18). The Spirit enables us to understand and improve ourselves through His word when we are obediently confirmed to Jesus Christ and this can only be accomplished by the help of the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. It is observed that when we come to the knowledge of God, then our eyes are opened to His truth and then we have some understanding in the things of God but we will need to be more enlightened, and to have our knowledge clearer and distinct. As Christians we should not think it enough to have warm affections, but we should labour to have clear understandings; and should be ambitious of knowing what is the hope of our calling in Christ Jesus is. Ephesians 1:17-18 Amplified Bible (AMP)17 [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him,18 By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones), The Holy Spirit teaches the believers and it is necessary for their new birth experience. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor.2:13-14) emphasized that the intellectuals of this world could not teach the knowledge he was giving to the Corinthian believers. He went on further to state that the natural person does not have the Spirit of God, in contrast to the Christian who does have the Spirit which enables him to understand the things of God (1 Cor. 15:44-46) . 1 Corinthians 2:13-14 Amplified Bible (AMP)13 And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language [to those who possess the Holy Spirit].14 But the natural, non spiritual man does not accept or welcome or admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly (meaningless nonsense) to him; and he is incapable of knowing them [of progressively recognizing, understanding, and becoming better acquainted with them] because they are spiritually discerned and estimated and appreciated. Only the Holy Spirit could reveal the truths of God (2Peter 1:19-21). We could never have discovered the mysteries of God or the benefits of Christ’s death by ourselves on our own. But we can know them by experience because they have been freely given to us by God through His Spirit (1 Cor. 2:9-12). 1 Corinthians 2:9-12New International Version (NIV)9 However, as it is written:“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”[a]— the things God has prepared for those who love him—10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. The Spirit of the Lord reveals the mystery of God unto the Prophets and Apostles of God. People who lived in the other ages, before the Pentecost, had a great deal of knowledge about God and His grace. However, that knowledge was not as all embracing as the revelation that we received in Christ Jesus. The Old Testament predicted that God’s grace would come to the Gentiles (Gen.12:3), but equality with the Jews in one body was a secret never revealed until the Spirit revealed it to Paul (NKJV Bible Commentary on Ephesians 3:5-6). Ephesians 3:2-6 New International Version (NIV) 2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. In conclusion, we see that when the Spirit of God speaks to the Churches, it is to represent Christ (Rev.2:2), for He is the Spirit of Christ (Gal.4:6) who guides(teaches, instructs) believers into all truth, and does not speak on His own authority (John 16:13). The Spirit of God teaches all believers who have an ear,to hear what the Spirit is saying, for such a believer who perseveres and is victorious in the face of trials and tribulations, shall the Lord give unto such person the fruit from the tree of life to eat (Rev.2:7,11,17,29, 3:6,13,22). Revelation 2:7 Amplified Bible (AMP) 7 He who is able to hear, let him listen to and give heed to what the Spirit says to the assemblies (churches). To him who overcomes (is victorious), I will grant to eat [of the fruit] of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
