Holy moley, Robert Smalls was amazing. Heroic, family-loving, freedom-loving, self-made entrepreneur, and ultimately used the tool of his oppression against his oppressors. Youve got to love a guy who steals a ship from the Confederacy and brings it to the north with the families of all of the black crewmen, and buys the plantation of his former slave master. And on top of that, showed incredible compassion by allowing the wife of his former slave owner to live there when she wandered back homeless and suffering from dementia. Just wow! Oh, and for Matt Denny, he was also a life-long Republican who served in both houses of the South Carolina legislature. And he achieved the rank of major general in the war, fought in 17 battles, and was credited for recruiting 5,000 men to fight for the north.
