Supplies needed include: Pens, Pencils, Crayons, Pencil Boxes, Glue Sticks, Pocket Folders, Highlighters, Notebooks, Reusable Water Bottles, Markers, Rulers, 3-Ring Binders, Lined Paper and Individual Tissue Packs. The UWPV has already obtained brand new backpacks and will be collecting new supplies only. Financial contributions are also welcome and will be used to purchase additional backpacks and supplies as needed. Contributions may be made online on the Stuff the Bus link at uwpv.org. General Manager, Bill Rogalski shared, “Holyoke Mall is extremely pleased to support and host this essential campaign. It’s hard to imagine being a child on your first day of school and not having new pencils, crayons or a notebook. Events such as this give shoppers and mall employees the chance to give what they can, even if it’s just a package of pencils, to help make a difference in the future of a child’s education.” After the collection drive and the Peter Pan buses have been “stuffed,” volunteers from United Way of Pioneer Valley will distribute the filled backpacks to the children through McKinney-Vento coordinators within the Agawam, Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke, Westfield and West Springfield school districts. These coordinators, established through the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, work directly the children and families in each school district to assist them to receive the services they need and serve as liaison between the school district, community and service providers.
