Home / A-Blog / Letter From a Miami Activist – The Dangers of Common Core Letter From a Miami Activist – The Dangers of Common Core December 22, 2014 by Luz de los Angeles Gonzalez Dear Governor Scott, Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Florida Legislators, Florida Department of Education, and Miami Dade County School Board Members, The conversation regarding the merits of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) continues across the country, with growing passion that shows no signs of abating. Just recently, retiring University of Miami President Donna Shalala submitted an OP-ED to the Miami Herald suggesting that CCSS was a mechanism for resolving what she perceived as the gender achievement gap. In rebuttal, Neal McCluskey of the Cato Institute shared his statistical analysis of the nonexistent gender gap. Assuredly, it will be up to the reader population to make their final analysis on the merits of each article. Nonetheless, what we all are experiencing is an “in-your-face” demonstration of the existing toxic culture of education. While we all know that the Florida legislature has committed some serious atrocities in passing laws that repudiate logical, realistic, and beneficial progress towards success in the classroom, I have not heard or seen one single action from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) representative of their acknowledgement of their responsibility to protect students and help establish and promote sound education policy. Seriously, what could be their greater priority or their sole purpose for existing? I repeat my previous request for your insistence that all members of the FLDOE resign. Much can be said and shown regarding the dangers of Common Core, Race to the Top, and High Stakes Standardized testing. But, as always, it is best to see and hear the evidence from those closest to the fight. Please review the below-mentioned articles. I look forward to your constituent engagement and personal response to this email. Daughter of University Professor does Common Core math problem at whiteboard – The unintended consequences of the TERC Investigations Math Curriculum https://youtube/watch?v=1YLlX61o8fg Mary Calamia (Expert Psychologist) – Testifying in front of the NY Educational Committee. New York was the founder of the OPT-OUT movement and continues to be one of the champions in protecting “whole student” success which requires elimination of unnecessary high stakes standardize testing https://youtube/watch?v=oCaXTNcNJRI Dr. James Milgram, Stanford University professor emeritus, the only mathematician on the Common Core validation committee refused to validate the Common Core math standards as rigorous. Jason Zimba, architect of the Common Core State Standards, admits to Dr. Sandra Stotsky that in addition to not being more rigorous, the CC math standards are not for STEM or top-tier colleges. https://youtube/watch?v=eJZY4mh2rt8 Joshua Katz speaks passionately about the Toxic Culture of Education (Stop the political and monetary trafficking of children) https://youtube/watch?v=BnC6IABJXOI I look forward to witnessing the precedent that the Florida legislature will “police” itself, reverse the curse of their numerous mistakes as it relates to Common Core and Race to the Top, and pass bills that return academic success to: policy enacted for the benefit of the classroom student; policy that supports the highest effectiveness of the classroom teacher; and, policy that actively engages the parent in cooperative participation in the learning process their children are experiencing in the classroom. Very truly yours, Luz de los Angeles Gonzalez Miami, F
