Home / Constitution / ACLU Is No Longer An Obama Ally Over NSA Spying ACLU Is No Longer An Obama Ally Over NSA Spying By Travis on July 19, 2013 redacted When Barack Obama was sworn in as President he declared that he was a man of the people, and that this would be the most transparent administration in American history with “an unprecedented level of openness in government”. Then the scandals came one after another, through his first term and into his second. Fast and Furious, Bengazhi, Snowden, FISA court rulings, handshake deals to get Obamacare past, scanning of US mail, massive NSA recording program, the march of underhandedness went on and on. But the president was not to be dissuaded. During a speech in February the president again proclaimed that his was “the most transparent administration in history.” Regardless of the evidence, it was clear the president was set to sell this message. The ridiculousness of this claim can now be seen in black and white. This year the courts laid out the conditions by which the federal government can force email providers and ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to turn over email and other messages transmitted over the internet. Surprisingly the ACLU, often partner with the president, bit the hand that has been feeding them when they sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the DoJ to lean if the FBI had similar guidelines for the retrieval of citizens text messages. The Justice Department complied with the letter of the law and in April sent a 15 page document back to the ACLU with a header calling it “Guidance for the minimization of text messages over dual-function cellular telephones.” The staff at the ACLU was floored, except for the title of the document, two and from lines of the memo, and page numbers, the document is completely blacked out. An outraged spokesman for the ACLU pointed out that it “does not even show the date, let alone what the policy is.” It is a clear sign of hypocrisy when the President’s own allies are crying “foul-ball”.
