Home Owners: No fun living close to homeless tents Five residents got up at the most recent City Council meeting to decry what they called an increased presence of homeless people in their neighborhoods. They also submitted 57 signatures from residents concerned about whats happening. Four of the speakers, including Stephanie Duran, Jaime Jimenez and Becky Holiday, were concerned with a mini camp that sprouted up on some vacant land in back of Stephan Gray Park, on W North Bear Creek Dr., near Highway 59. A lender, Peter Paley, who is seeking authority over the vacant land also appeared, and said he was working with the city to properly remove the homeless people and their tents and items. The residents complained about bad odors, a perceived threat to many underprivileged children who play in the park, needles on the ground, defecation, and lack of concern for those living in this area of town. Another Merced resident, Alice Beasley, was concerned about homeless people wandering around in increased numbers near the neighborhood around West 22nd and 21st streets, near the County Administration Building. Home owner Jaime Jimenez told the council, Residents have commented, They dont care about us. If this would happen in their neighborhoods, they would have the police out here, and a SWAT team. ... So prove them wrong. Or are they right? Leaders and city staff indicated they are working with the lender and possibly land owner of the site where the tents are located for the proper authorization to deal with the situation.
