Home Win for Aggie Softball By Justine Gaskamp Goodwell, Okla. — The Aggies grabbed their first home win of the season Saturday afternoon against the University of Texas-Permian Basin in the final game of a four-game series. Saturdays double-header started off with a win for the visitors as the Lady Falcons took a 13-6 victory in game one; but as the weather conditions declined, the Aggies upped their game earning their first win at home with a score of 5-3 in game two. The Aggies scored the first runs of game two in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rachel Thompson drove a double to right-center and was backed up by Madison Heathington who hit a homerun good for two RBI. Later in the fourth, Kolbi Graves hit a single to shortstop bringing in Salina Galindo for the Aggies third run of the inning. The Lady Falcons came back with three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Aggies stood their ground and scored two more runs to close out the fifth. Lilli Ward led with a single to left field and was advanced to second on an error; Thompson walked to first and then Ward and Thompson each took a free base with a wild UTPB pitch; Ward then scored on a passed ball and Thompson was brought in on a single by Laura Trehal. OPSU owned a 5-3 lead after five innings and held on for the win. Samantha Arledge earned her seventh win of the season in Saturdays game two. Arledge entered the game with two outs in the fifth inning after Taylor Richardson pitched 4.2 innings. Richardson gave up seven hits and three runs and dished out three strikeouts; Arledge allowed zero hits and zero runs while throwing four strikeouts. UTPB took both games on Friday winning game one 8-2 and game two 7-0. Rachel Thompson led off in the circle for the Aggies in game one and took the loss with nine hits and eight earned runs. Anyssa Barbosa led the team in hitting with a double in the second good for two RBI. Arledge pitched a full seven innings in Fridays game two taking a loss with 12 hits and five earned runs; she threw four strikeouts. Arledge also started game one Saturday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with two strikeouts; Taylor Richardson came in at relief in the sixth inning and finished the game with one hit, one earned run and two strikeouts. Rachel Thompson led the Aggies in hitting with an average of .455 for the series; she went 5-11 with two runs and one RBI. Madison Heathington brought in five RBI for the series behind UTPBs Jennifer Quam who led the series with six. Heathington and Barbosa led the Aggies defensively with 23 and 21 putouts respectively for the weekend. The Aggies overall record now stands at 8-30 with one conference win. The first three games in the UTPB series count as Heartland Conference games; the fourth game was considered non-conference. The softball team will travel to Portales, N.M. this week for a double-header against Eastern New Mexico Tuesday, April 8. The final home games of the season will take place Thursday and Friday, April 17-18 against Heartland opponent Lubbock Christian University; senior softball players will be recognized prior to Fridays game which begins at noon.
