Home from Bangor. It was a very intense time as Dad seemed to be - TopicsExpress

Home from Bangor. It was a very intense time as Dad seemed to be failing when I arrived. Elizabeth M Stanley and I slept in Dads room with Mom all night. Mom was in a recliner that wouldnt stay horizontal because she wasnt tall enough, so Liz and I curled up on a rather wide window sill and rested our heads on the top of the recliner to keep it back so Mom could sleep. Dad has pneumonia on top of other issues and so we slept with our ears open to any difficulty he might have breathing and clearing his lungs. So thankful for the medical knowledge my niece Leslie Miller and nephew Phil Meek have and their willingness to show leadership and love by being hands on with my Dads care and comfort. I learned a deep respect as I saw the kindness in the hearts of my nieces and nephews toward their grandpa and how tenderly they treated their grandmother. Liz, Mom and I awoke this morning to my father talking in a surprisingly lucid way with the nurse and it would appear for the moment that he has rallied some although there is the grim situation where his kidneys are failing. At one point while Phil and I were locked in on Dads comfort last night, he spoke suddenly in a clear voice to us, Can everyone hear me? It was as though he had something of deep importance to say to the family. We got everyones attention in that crowded room and we all came close around Dads bed. I saw the somber faces of my family focusing all attention on hearing what my Dad had called us closer to say as though we were waiting for a declaration. What followed then was a rather lengthy sentence of unintelligible rambling, after which Elizabeth and I caught each others eyes and simultaneously released some tension in the odd humor of that moment. Because I know that my sisters are with him and Mom and there will be a ton of visitors today - that along with his stabilized condition, I spent some good time with him and Mom alone before I came home. Still waiting and as before, it is his comfort through this process and the strength for my mother to handle whatever comes that is my main concern.
