Home from constituent hours with State Senator David Burns and Rep. Larry Lockman Thanks to the dozen or so of you who dropped by Machias town office to share your concerns and meet with us -- it kind of makes getting all trussed up in a suit and tie, and putting black socks on all worth it. :) Seriously though, folks raised a lot of weighty issues that we needed to hear about before we disappear under the dome for six months. Making sure that residents of Maines Unorganized Territories have the right to vote on windpower projects was one; the pros and cons of Sunday hunting was another. The need to protect municipal revenue sharing and excise tax revenues was a third. We also heard some rather compelling thoughts on police video cameras and the issues each town and county police department are grappling with in that regard. And there was a consensus that we really need to come up with guidelines around training and registering service animals -- guidelines that will protect people with disabilities rights as well as the general public. All in all, I was impressed both by the number of folks who gave up part of their Saturday to meet with us, and by the depth of folks concerns/questions/ideas. I am also hopeful that many of these folks, and those of you who could not make it out two Saturdays before Christmas will be active in Augusta these next two years. One thing I have said before, and will again, is that local people need to participate. Whether thats writing or calling us, showing up to testify on a bill that is important to you, or helping inform others about what were up to. Any way you cut it, an engaged public makes us better public servants. So thank you all!!!
