Home, here now on the land I grew from. Today Alba and I explored the space around my parents home in a suburb by the sea. Houses everywhere, development for as long as I can remember. But still we found golden passionfruit climbing wild around an ornamental tree; we found fennel, escaped from a vegetable garden and peeking through a fence, heavy with fragrance and delicious seed; incredibly tasty rocket (roquette or arugula) growing vibrant from the small soil lining between cement pathway and residential fence; we found citrus - mandarins, lemons, limes; we saw some kind of pink blossoming fruit tree, apple maybe, peeking over the fence of a nearby neighbour. There is lavender just bursting with oil, with the most unreal, soft hue flowers in an oft-trampled and well-unloved section of land near a pedestrian underpass. Some kind of wild radish, its intense peppery scent lifting me by the nose, up into the cold, blue clear winter sky above. A few brave bees dancing their magic upon native blossoms. Life is everywhere, nourishment of all kinds, even in this cold weather. It makes me so happy to be here, so happy to know what I know, so happy to be able to share it with my daughter, with my family, with my friends.
