Home-made SplitPea Soup this can be done in a crockpot or the stovetop on low... Hamsteak bone in uncooked 1 package of dry splitpeas...wash and soak as direction on package instructs 1 large sweet potatoe skinned 3 large white potatoes skinned 4 or 5 carrots medium skinned 3 shallots 1 container of cream 6 or 8 ounces 5 cloves or 1/8 teaspoon clove powder 3 tablespoons Darkbrown sugar 1 stick of butter cut vegetables into quarters cut ham into large "stewmeat" size pieces keep bone you may add black pepper&salt to taste when serving place ham and bone, potatoes, carrots and shallots into crockpot or pan and cover with water a low heat on both should be used after 3 hours check potatoes for tenderness if tender enough to mash use a hand held potatoe masher and gently stir while mashing soup once this is done add cloves, cream, butter and darkbrown sugar, continue cooking for at least half an hour after this step is completed but for maximum thickening more time may be required but no longer than 45 minutes... stir well with potatoe masher one last time before serving. Garnish can be what ever you prefer, yet my choice is to save an ounce of cream to spot on top of soup in bowls with a few decorative oyster crackers with a dash of bacon crumbles...Enjoy!
