Homeland Security says it typically sees a spike in counterfeit money in circulation in December and January. Jonathan Schuck, the resident agent in charge with Homeland Securitys Columbus Ohio office, says people are usually in need of extra money this time of year and use this time to generate fake cash. “They figure cashiers and clerks are younger and its a busy time so not everyone is checking money at that point. So, we see a spike in our numbers every December and January.” Counterfeit cash has been reported from central to Northeastern Ohio in the last few weeks. Our department took a report this morning from a convenience store receiving a fake $20 bill this weekend. The counterfeiting of money is one of the oldest crimes in history. You can help guard against this threat by being more familiar with your currency. secretservice.gov/money_detect.shtml
