Homeless Girl I was riding back from the coffee place today and - TopicsExpress

Homeless Girl I was riding back from the coffee place today and while at the stop light at Ocean and Rose, I saw a girl, maybe 30, collapsed back against the fence looking sort of confused and scared. She was still slung sort of half on her bike and a few feet away she had a big designer handbag full of stuff. Her hair was matted and her face smeared and dirty but not so long ago she must have been stunning, before things went so terribly wrong. She was clutching a few crumpled bills in one hand and a few coins in the other. She looked like a cross between the two homeless girls in the pics below, by street photographer John Brodie. I stopped and talked with her and her eyes lit up and she stopped being afraid soon as I asked her how she was doing. I got off my bike and sat there and we talked about nothing in particular. I gave her a few dollars - she didnt ask for them and seemed embarrassed to take them. She was so happy and gracious that I had stopped to speak with her, that I had noticed she was alive. She transformed into someone beautiful in a few short minutes of contact and a few kind words. It felt like a kind of resurrection. When I was about to leave I said I wanted her remember something - that she was different (probably bipolar), but she wasnt bad. She started crying, ashamed, and said her nature was hard sometimes but it was hers, and for a few seconds there she forgot to hate herself and she was glad I stopped. She said she loved me. When I rode away I knew that I might have given her a few bucks and said a few things worth hearing, but in her own strange, human way, she saved me.
