Homeless and in Poughkeepsie, NY. You may be able to get into the overnight shelter but once 7 a.m. arrives you are asked to leave. It is an overnight shelter. 647 different people had no place to live last year. What happens during the day. The homeless could walk aimlessly throughout Poughkeepsie. They can walk in and out of stores. They can use bathrooms in fast food restaurants. They can pan handle. They could be arrested for loitering. They could sleep in parks. Instead MHA provides a daytime homeless shelter. Homeless individuals can be inside, shower, do laundry, search for housing and work with a care manager. HUD funded 20% of this programs budget. This year HUD announced they would no longer fund shelters. MHA knows how important it is to the community, to the businesses, to the jail population and to the 647 homeless individuals to have a place to be. We will have to work very hard to make up this $55,000 cut to our budget.
