Homily for Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, 10/28/13 It can be - TopicsExpress

Homily for Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, 10/28/13 It can be frustrating for historians, and frustrating for those who must preach about the apostles, that for most of them all we know is that their names appear on a list. But if one historian, Eamon Duffy, is correct, the very obscurity of such as Simon and Jude is itself the message that their feast sets before us. Duffy writes: The apostles are, first and foremost, witnesses to the mighty works of God. The Church is built on them, not because they were spiritual geniuses or inspired leaders, but because in the providence of God they happened to be there when God sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. Their value to us lies precisely in their ordinariness and their weakness. [Duffy, Faith of Our Fathers, 61] Ordinary and weak people who just happened to be there, that=s what we celebrate in the apostles. Ordinary and weak people who just happen to be here, thats who are celebrating in this chapel today. The Church built on the apostles is a lasting, indeed an eternal, reminder of what God can accomplish in and through ordinary and weak people.
