Homily recipe for 18th Sun of Year A: Is 55:1-3, Rom 8:35-39, Matt 14:13-21. Give them something to eat yourselves. Jesus places a big challenge in today’s gospel to the church of today with the growing tendency of taking much more than giving to the poor. Helpless pessimism in the face of poverty or lack is dangerous. There are 3 attitudes that played out in the gospel; 1st is Philip’s reaction: the non-believer’s reaction to problem situations. He failed to look beyond himself for solutions. 2nd is Andrew’s reaction: the believer’s reaction; he trusted Jesus and always brought people to Jesus- he brought the lad with 5 loaves and 2 fish. 3rd is The Lad’s reaction: the reaction of a generous soul. He willingly supplied Jesus with the raw materials for the miracle of today’s gospel. Lesson: Little in the hands of Jesus is always much, Eph 3:20, Jn 12:3-4. One single person trusting in divine grace can make a lot of difference to the fortune of a community. The Christian Religion does not actually consist in what we may do for God but in what we allow God to do for humanity through our faith in Him. Look at people like Mother Theresa of Calcutta, etc. I am particularly worried about our mission schools. Are they really set up for business purposes or for humanitarian reasons? Have a nice Sunday!
