Homunculus (Germany) 1916 Although produced a few years shy of the formation of the Weimar government, “Homunculus” directed by Otto Rippert and written by Robert Reinert, is an early science fiction or horror story that contains many of the themes that would recur during the Weimer era including the notion of the fabricated doppelganger such as the Golem, the Maria robot from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” and the story of Alraune. It was extremely popular and six one-hour serials were made from the story. Time hasn’t been good to the film and sections and scenes survived in washed out prints (see illustration). Then a crate was discovered in the Moscow film archives and a complete, if disorganized, version of the film was found. It was slowly put back together by the Munich film museum and had a premiere just a few days ago as a work-in-progress at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn, Germany. There are, according to reports, still pieces missing here and there, and another showing will occur sometime in the fall. When it will get to DVD isn’t known.
