Hon. Dr . Ya u Umar Gwajo Gwajo Profile Hon Yau Umar was born on 8th August, 1964 at the town of Gwajo- Gwajo in Mai Adua local government area of Katsina state Nigeria. By the local customs ofthe area, parents have a duty to ensure and guarantee the education and moral upbringing of their children at their formative years, by among other things, arranging for them to attend a Quranic school at home. In keeping with the local customs, Yau Umar was enrolled in such school at a very early age, where he learnt to read and recite the holy Quran, exposed to Islamic moral precepts and taught to write in the Arabic alphabets. When he reached primary school enrollment age, he was enrolled at the Gwajo-Gwajo primary school in 1972-1978 and after six years of foundational education, he passed out with a primary school leaving certificate which qualified him to proceed to secondary school. Consequently, in 1978-1983, he was admitted into Government Secondary School Funtua for a five year secondary school education. He passed out in 1983 having obtained the West African school Certificate (WASC) in general education. In 2000-2002, Hon. Yau Umar then proceeded to Federal College of Education Kano, where he pursued a two- year academic programme leading to the award of a National Diploma certificate in Public Administration. No sooner had he graduated, than he returned to the same institution in 2002-2003, studied and obtained an Advanced Diploma Certificate also in Public Administration. Hon. Umar began his public service carrier in 1985 as primary school Teacher under Daura Local Government Education Authority. He became attracted to this noblest of professions due to its prestige as well as his desire to serve and contribute to the development of the community. As a teacher, he distinguished himself by his zest and flair that, barely two years in the service, he rose to the prestigious post of a Headmaster. However, like most ambitious young men of his generation, Hon. Umars thoughtsbegan to focus on taking up bigger tasks and challenges of wider spectrum. Consequently, in 1987 he applied and was considered for employment as a billing officer under the then Kaduna State Water Board, a position he held until 1991 when he resigned voluntarily to join partisan politics. POLITICAL CARRIER: Hon. Yau Umars interest in politics coincided with the unfolding of the politicaltransition programme of the Babangida administration in 1989 which witnessed theformation of two political parties namely, National Democratic Convention (NRC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP). In 1991, he formally joined and became a card carrying member of the SDP. His decision to be in the party was informed by his conviction that the partys philosophy was one which closely matched his political ideology and beliefs. Meanwhile, the countdown to the general elections had commenced and the twoparties were both in the search for credible candidates to field in all the rounds of the election. The build up to the election was eventful; as it happened that Katsina had achieved statehood a couple of years earlier. Therefore, for the first time governor and legislators would be elected for the young state. Already tested, proven and popular on the political landscape, Hon. Umar emerged ashis partys candidate for the House of Assembly election to represent MaiAdua constituency. He contested and was duly returned, thus becoming one of the pioneer members of Katsina State House of Assembly. Hon. Yau Umars outstanding performance as a member brought him into the political limelight once again. Since then, his political carrier continues to grow from strength to strength. The premature termination of the third republic by the military in 1993 led to the dissolution of democratic institutions including the legislature. Yau Umar was elected councilor from Natsalle ward in MaiAdua local government area. The tragic death of General Abacha in 1998 brought to an abrupt end the transition programme instituted by his administration. Subsequent political developments in the country which ushered in the fifth republic culminated in the enthronement of democratic governments on all the tiers of government in 1999. By now, a top notch politician in his own right, Hon. Yau Umar joined the newly registered Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He soon overshadowed his political peers and almost dominated the political landscape of the MaiAdua axis. For the better part of the period between 1999 till 2007, he either emerged as elected chairman of his local government or else, appointed caretaker chairman. In 2007, having already transformed his nascent local government politically andeconomically, Hon. Yau Umar decided to contest in the House of Assembly election in order to give his constituents tangible representation in the government of the state. For the second time, he was elected member of House of Assembly, representing MaiAdua constituency. His wealth of experience and proven qualities made Hon. Yau Umar one among equals, that he was unanimously elected speaker by his fellow members in 2007. His administration as speaker form 2007 to 2011 was marked by high impact legislative activities and institutional capacity development. During the 2011 general elections, Hon. Yau Umar resubmitted himself to theelectorate and for the third time, won the mandate and confidence of his constituents to represent them for another four year term in the House.
