Hon Hakeem Muniru DESERVES A SECOND TERM; British politician and philosopher Edmund Burkein in his 1774 Speech to the Electors at Bristol at the Conclusion of the Poll was noted for his articulation of the principles of representation against the notion that elected officials should be delegates who exactly mirror the opinions of the electorate: It ought to be the happiness and glory of a representative to live in the strictest union, the closest correspondence, and the most unreserved communication with his constituents. Their wishes ought to have great weight with him; their opinion, high respect; their business, unremitting attention. It is his duty to sacrifice his repose, his pleasures, his satisfactions, to theirs; and above all, ever, and in all cases, to prefer their interest to his own. Let’s take a look at “Dividend of Democracy”. It speaks of the “goodies and rewards” flowing from good governance in a constitutional democracy. The concept was coined by politicians in Nigeria to describe their efforts in the provision of basic amenities for the people. Next, is the conceptualization or definition of “Human Conscience”. Dr D.K Olukoya of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) defined conscience as “God’s policeman”, a still small voice that prompts and reminds you of your good and bad conduct, bahaviour, action or inactions. As for Wikipedia.org, Conscience is an aptitude, faculty, intuition or judgment that assists in distinguishing right from wrong, the voice within. The questions are: “Why do people seek political power? Who has a “Conscience?”. And, to what extent has political power and conscience facilitated the delivery of “dividends of democracy” to the people?” Conscience will raise questions like “Is it fair for you to enjoy these huge wealth and riches while your people are in darkness, while they die of hunger, underdevelopment and lack qualitative education? It will always prompt you to do that which is good but it is you who will decided whether to obey that “still small voice of God” or not. It is on this note that I find Hon. Hakeem Muniru as good example of a man of conscience, a silent achiever. Some people are of the opinion that Hon Hakeem Muniru is like others that neglected his people, but come to think of it, the list of some his achievements make a lot of noise of him.
