Honda Civic, First Gen, 1972-79, SB1, SG, SE, VB The first generation Honda Civic was introduced in 1972, but sold as a 1973 model. It was equipped with a 1,169 cc (38kw) four-cylinder water-cooled engine and featured front power disc brakes, reclining vinyl bucket seats, simulated wood trim on the dashboard, as well as optional air conditioning and an AM/FM radio. Prior to 1973, Honda was a company known more for its motorcycles than for its cars, which were tiny two-cylinder 600cc runabouts. This changed when the Civic offering amazing space efficiency in a fun little car weighing in at just 680kg. For 1974, the Civics engine size grew slightly, to 1,237 cc and power went up to 39kw. The CVCC (or Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber) engine debuted in 1975. Offered alongside the standard Civic engine, the 40kw CVCC engine displaced 1,488cc. 1978 brought slight cosmetic changes, such as a black grille, rear-facing hood vents (that replaced the sideways versions) and new indicators now mounted below the bumper. Previous models were quite large and mounted above the bumper like spotlights. This final change for the first generation (Nine to date) also saw the CVCC power increased to a massive 47kw. All engines were transversely mounted engine and front-wheel-drive layout and 12-inch wheels maximized interior room and was available throughout the series as a coupe, both a three- and a five-door hatchback, as well as a five-door station wagon. Transmissions offered included a four-speed manual or a two-speed Hondamatic automatic gearbox. An all-independent suspension made the Civic very agile. J.
