Honda Transalp XL700 front wheel arrangement. While on my recent - TopicsExpress

Honda Transalp XL700 front wheel arrangement. While on my recent Arctic trip I discovered a slight poor design fault with the front wheel arrangement. Before the trip I had the wheel to bits and replaced the rather worn bearings. I then re-assembled the wheel and put the spindle through it. As per normal then I placed the wheel between the forks and then held it in place with the cap and its 4 nuts.I then continued to screw in the spindle into the left fork and once that was tight I then tightened up the holding cap with its 4 nuts. However, one morning I was doing the daily inspection before the days long trip and discovered that the spacer between the right fork and the bearing/wheel was loose and able to turn on the spindle. This of course meant there was sideways movement on the front wheel. What is silly on the XL700 is that there is no way of pulling the two forks together to make the whole spacer/bearing system tight. I then had to loosen the 4 holding nuts and while someone pushed both forks together I then tightened the 4 holding nuts. Of course with it loose as it was, if ones bearings are a bit tight or worn it could also mean that the spindle could turn in the inner bearing instead of the bearing itself turning. Thought I better just share that experience with other owners.
