Honda courthouse community picture to be recreated GREENSBURG - Prior to the announcement in 2006 that Honda Motor Company was searching for its next North American site for a new production plant, many cities and towns scurried about to entice the automaker to select them as the new home. As rumors swirled that Southeastern Indiana was one of the top choices being considered by Honda, the Decatur County community rallied to show its support, hoping to snare the automaker that would eventually bring more than 2,000 jobs to the area. On a beautiful weekday evening, approximately 250 residents and supporters gathered on the Decatur County Courthouse lawn, dressed in a red shirt, to form the Honda signature logo H for a photo that would be sent to Honda officials, along with an encouraging message that the company was indeed welcome to set up shop in the Greensburg area. That effort, as well as a lot of work from others in the community, may have played a role in Honda’s decision to open its sixth automotive plant in America in the city of Greensburg in 2008. As the automaker celebrates its fifth year anniversary since beginning production in Greensburg, Honda officials and civic leaders in the community are attempting to recreate that signature photo as part of a commemorative effort. The Decatur County Commissioners have given their approval of using the Decatur County Courthouse Lawn once again for a 2013 photo. The photo will be taken at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. Local leaders need your help and are asking residents to don a red shirt and come to be in the new photo. Numerous Honda Associates all dressed in their standard company-issued white uniforms, will also be a part of the photo. The mixture of red and white will symbolize the bond that was created between the company and the community. A Honda Civic and Acura ILX produced at the Greensburg plant will also be used in the photo. “We are making plans on how to line everyone up and will be as organized as we possibly can so we don’t take a lot of people’s time,” Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Emsweller said. The Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to have the assistance of David Fry and Bryan Robbins of Decatur County Memorial Hospital assisting with this effort. Fry was one of the organizers for the first photo shoot in 2007. “The turnout and support we had with this effort back then was really amazing,” Fry said. “It’s terrific to be able to bring people together to commemorate this anniversary at the staple of our community, our Decatur County Courthouse and the tower tree.” The process is simple – put on your best red shirt and show up at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at the courthouse lawn. Bring your family and friends. Organizers hope to have the photo completed by 6 p.m. For more information: 812-663-2832.
