Honestly, it was too hard to find a favorite example of one of his performances. Too many amazing scenes to chose from - the You had everything scene from Love Liza, or the robbing the drug dealer scene from Before the Devil Knows Youre Dead, or the I Did Everything I Could scene from Capote, or pretty much any scene from The Master. This interview is nice, however. Ive found that Ive been able to deal with my own issues, and inner-demons, through reading great books, listening to great music, or (especially) watching great films. More than talking, or seeking professional help, has this worked as a means of catharsis. Hoffman, more than any other actor, was able to transcend and help me with many issues on many occasions. I know I didnt know the man, but this loss has affected me on a personal level nevertheless. There has never been another actors work which has been able to alleviate me of so many internal conflicts, as well as help me to recall, or discover, aspects about myself which I had either forgotten, or previously hadnt known of. Its one thing when art is able to impress, inspire, or effortlessly allow one to escape within its pages, or pastorale, or screen. But when art or, more specifically, the artist is able to touch on a nerve, a real human nerve, thats when the art suddenly becomes something else. It becomes eternal. Or, rather, they become eternal. Thats it.
