Honestly not surprised, but still left feeling crushed & outraged by the audacity of our employer (on Christy Clarks command, make no mistake) at providing such an unwarranted accusatory, inflammatory & callous excuse for not allowing a fair end to this dispute that allows students to go back to school: I have concluded that the BCTF proposal was never intended to be a serious proposal, and was merely a vehicle for a press conference to give false hope to BCTF members and the public... The proposal, therefore, should be rejected for all the above reasons. (Peter Cameron, BCPSEA lead negotiator in his official letter refusing arbitration yesterday.) The other reasons cited were refusal to drop their E80 clause, which is their only escape route out of an anticipated 3rd Supreme Court ruling against them (which will cost them millions more than any arbitrated settlement between existing proposals!) AND their citing the fact that when an agreement with doctors went to arbitration they say it resulted in having to raise taxes. On the last point, which keeps coming up, I have some queries: First, if an impartial 3rd party believed doctors deserved that level of wage increase, was it because that was the only way to keep their pay competitive & therefore keep quality, experienced medical professionals in our province? (I dont know the history but am guessing...) And if thats true, isnt that worth your tax dollars to get medical care from those most highly qualified?? (I certainly dont begrudge that! Such an ER doctor & such a heart surgeon saved my Dads life!) And IF the government had budgeted & prioritized spending responsibly & taken into account the value of such medical professionals in our province, shouldnt they have been able to afford a pay raise without raising consumer sales tax (perhaps a fair, smaller increase provided each year over time to prevent such a pay gap to begin with)?? And finally, DOESNT THE SAME ALL APPLY TO THE NECESSITY OF QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION IN OUR PROVINCE???
