Honesty requires that we be critical of things both within us and without us. To be critical means to raise courageous questions about what we think and what we do. We must question those things we love and like and value and those things we dislike, and resist and devalue. Honesty requires that we ask why of all things and only live out, or obey those things which survive the questioning of our soul. If we have the courage to question those things which are most respected and those things which are most despised we can learn to live and love with a clear mind and a clean heart. We can remember and move forward with great wisdom and care. This is part of what the West African principal of Sankofa teaches us. It is a gift to the world of a diasporic people who have shaped modernity from its underside by courageously raising questions about the promises made by our civilization and its aspirations but broken by our society.
