Honey Bun is our 90 lb dog, she has a head the size of a Thanksgiving turkey, the build of a muscular Rottweiler, the strength of a bull and a bark that is, in a word, terrifying. I mean Ive seen people cross to the other side of our street to avoid walking by our house because shes standing at the window barking. But if youve ever been in our house and sat on our couch youve probably experienced our four legged beast hop up next to you, slowly lean against you and, before you know it, she has completely engulfed your lap in an uncomfortable pile of elbows, angles and red fur as she begs to be pet. So imagine, if you will, the sheer terror on the face of the bus driver as Honey Bun pushed past me, knocking my coffee out of my hands, ran out the front door and charged the bus that was dropping off Bryce. In 4 barking bounds she was at the bus door and, realizing she was in trouble changed her demeanor to one of a guilty dog, then tail lowered and ears back circled the bus coming back to the opened bus door. By this time I managed to run down the sidewalk barefoot and in my nightgown still holding bottle of Windex in one hand from cleaning the windows mere seconds before shouting Honey Bun! Dont you DARE get on that bus! Youre scaring the children! Get in the house! HONEY BUN!!! The driver quickly realized the threat was not being attacked by the dog but ending up with an extra passenger who would merrily lick all the sticky off the preschoolers still on the bus and relaxed. I grabbed the beast by the collar, sheepishly nodded at the bus driver resisting the urge to explain that Im still in my nightgown because Ive been so busy cleaning and just held up my bottle of Windex hoping it relayed the message, hugged my son who is too young to know just how embarrassing his family is and headed backup the sidewalk into the house. Mission Mediocre Mom accomplished. Nailing it.
