Honey just remarked how slow the day has been and, compared to the previous six or seven, shes right. Her pain is some better and they are trying to transition her from IV-delivered medication to oral, more like that which she has been taking at home lo these many months. They theorize that a fair amount of the pain is muscular-related in the vicinity of T5 they worked on yesterday and that moving around more will help solve some of the soreness. The IV pain med makes her sleep a lot so theres very little exercise of those muscles and the cycle continues. She has eaten some today but that needs to pick up considerably. The hospitalist - a new term to me that translates into an M.D. that only works sections of the hospital quarterbacking care - is making noises like we might go home sometime later in the week and possibly begin daily radiation treatments beginning Monday. All of that is still preliminary chatter pending biopsy results and Honey making some progress in the mobility and eating departments. Weslee (daughter) is on her way back home. We so enjoy what she brings to any room, and this week, a hospital room. She and Nathan (son) are in very close communication about our situation and as someone observed just today, are maintaining a healthy balance of presence and distance. We couldnt ask for more or better. It is also gratifying to see how their respective wide circles in Martin TN and Birmingham AL continue to encircle us. The staff (nursing and otherwise) around here is wonderful - personable, professional, and seem to appreciate being appreciated. Honey excels at that. While mopping our floor this morning, the housekeeper and I had a delightful conversation that centered mostly on matters of faith. She is bringing in the New Year at her east Nashville church and seems to live in the part of the Advent season some of us often neglect - the glorious return of Jesus. She not obnoxious about it at all, but probably thinks about and looks toward it more than some of the rest of us. Good folks, this bunch! Honey is over there asleep (again), not wanting anything to eat, gently fighting to get better, and appreciating everything everyone is doing to help her get there. So care-giving in 6628 is not so bad.
